Graphics card running at PCI-E 1.1 in 2.0 board..
« on: January 25, 2012, 09:50:09 AM »
Okay, not sure I like this.

I purchased a PCI-Express x16 2.0 motherboard, just for the sake of having something good in there (see my custom system topic).

Now, I checked GPU-Z, and it reported the same as my ASUS motherboard: PCI-E x16 1.1
GPU-Z also told me that it may be in Energy Saving mode. So I ran the test it provided me. Still 1.1, and AFAIK no change in MHz or something.

Attached is a screenshot of GPU-Z.

My graphics card is a Radeon HD 4870.
My motherboard is an Asrock G41M-GS3
And my PSU is 450 watt, just in case you need to know.

I'm going to run Bejeweled as HTML5 version first, lessee if that performs better then on my Asus.
EDIT: Wow, this boy really flows through the game now... Effects and the Level Complete scene now feel like a breeze. No hickups or glitches or anything, just smoothness. GPU load keeps around +/- 10%.
But I would still like some more info on this...

Yeah, the board says "PCIE2" on it, by the x16 slot. In my eyes that means it's 2.0

I had the same slot in my old Asus motherboad, too, I guess. It also ran with PCI-E 1.1.

I guess I'm unlucky again;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G35_(chipset)#Core_2_chipsets

The G41 chipset on that page doesn't say it supports 2.0, while the others do *sigh.
Guess I'll have to do it with either the GeForce 7600 GS or the Intel GMA X4500..

EDIT:
Check here, this is where I looked (Dutch, but I'll point you):
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/270423/asrock-g41m-gs3.html#tab:info

Under the Interfaces, the "Card Interface (moederbord)", it says: "PCI-e 2.x 16x", which means that it should support 2.0..

Read some reviews, it indeed isn't a PCI-E 2.0 slot. Oh well, they also said it provides good compatibility with 2.0 cards, so I couldn't care less :P

If the card doesn't perform well I'll just stick on the onboard video. A GMA X4500 should provide me enough power to work with.

Did a few tests with Portal 2, Minecraft, Team Fortress 2, Bejeweled 3 and some more.
All run fine.

Solved.
