BACKUP !
« on: January 16, 2012, 08:42:33 PM »
Hello again
I have a question about backing up a computer.
If I owned an Autobody Shop and had everything on the computer it would be a tragedy if the something happened to the computer. All company records would be lost. If I want to perform a backup how long will it take. First off it is an older XP OS so the computer must only be so big but lots of invoices.  Would it run a backup overnight or will it be longer.
Next question is what will it do with all the files ? Will it zip them up for storage ?
Now Before I start I need to know how much storage space I need to backup the system.
Im confused so I will take advice on what to do.
Also see this thread as I feel it is related.

So all you want to do is backup the important invoices?
1 GB of space would be more then enough for you, an invoice should be a few kilobytes.

Some backup programs will zip it up in their own formats and save it onto the device you specified, that could be a USB stick, portable Hard Disk or DVD Disk (make sure too but in a blank before the backup starts).
It shouldn't take too long to do as well I would say about 10 minutes at most.
With data that small you could get away with full backups.

TY
So the computer also has some Estimation software and a Parts Program. The parts program has part numbers and everything.
I suppose a full backup would be best.
How will I know how much space I need to do the backup in full. Will the computer tell me ?

The backup program should tell you how much space is being used to backup files yes.
