Taking a dive into my BIOS
« on: December 26, 2011, 05:31:12 AM »
Right, so as I think it all is a bit scary in there and I certainly AM going to break stuff, are there any precautions I need to know as a first-time BIOSer?

I need to get in there to change my boot order and maybe also change some graphics settings.
Maybe you should marry that thing since you love it so much. Do you want to marry it? WELL I WON'T LET YOU! How does that feel?
That thing is probably some sort of raw sewage container. Go ahead and rub your face all over it.

One thing to remember is that if you make any changes and save them....and the change caused an issue you didn't expect...is to remember the previous setting so you can revert back to it.

Also, let us know the vendor and version of your BIOS, please.

Stay away from any settings to do with the cpu or timing of any kind. Other than that, there is a setting to put everything back to default  settings anyway so you should be safe.

I have an ASUS P5KPL AM SE motherboard, no idea of my bios. I'll write the name and version down. I'll also write down any settings I find before I start. Good to keep that with me.

@bigguy: Ah, good to remember that. I'll keep an eye on that switch and write down the directions to it :)

Oh by the way, is there any way to test a BIOS in a virtual machine? I've got Virtualbox as virtual machine software.

Oh okay, then I'll just go straight to a real computer :)
(I've always got some kind of communication with me in case anything happens, I'll take my iMac and my iPod with me)
