Microsoft: We can remotely delete Windows 8 apps (Your opinion)
« on: December 23, 2011, 10:02:21 AM »

Quote
Microsoft will be able to throw a "kill switch" to disable or even remove an app from users' Windows 8 devices, the company revealed in documentation released earlier this week for its upcoming Windows Store.

Kill switches -- so called because a simple command can deactivate or delete an app -- are common in mobile app stores. Both Apple and Google can flip such a switch for apps distributed by the iOS App Store and Android Market, respectively.

Do you think that this will be good for computer users? And if not, why?

My opinion about this is pretty simple: this feature is grabbing more control from Windows users, instead of giving more control to the more advanced users. But on the other side people are also more protected from malware and the like.

Maybe you should marry that thing since you love it so much. Do you want to marry it? WELL I WON'T LET YOU! How does that feel?
That thing is probably some sort of raw sewage container. Go ahead and rub your face all over it.

If I have said it once I will say it again. The ONLY person that should be on MY computer is me or who I let on it. I certainly do NOT want MS in there messing with crap. This is a privacy issue as far as I am concerned.

My opinion says that people wont like it. This leads into all kinds of other stuff like the possibility of removing one thing and replacing it with another. That would be like an update of sorts.
I think its kinda like if I buy a car from you. But you tell me where to drive it even after its paid for.

I do agree with you. Windows Update's Automatic Update feature already is a privacy issue.

I'm with you Bigguy..I have always maintained that I alone will be in control of my PC, not Microdaft, Facebook, the Government or anyone else. I have been removing or disabling anything automatic since Win95.

I hate to be the only one on the vendor's side here...but, we, as computer operators...let them into our computers...every day.  We opt-in for services that they provide...like sending them information about the sites we visit...or the applications we use.  They ask us when we download a program if they can collect data from us (protecting our anonymity) so they can offer us a better experience with the software we choose to use.

I look at it this way...if they can provide a service that will protect me from other parties' harmful intentions...I'm all for it.  If you think, at any time, you can honestly live your life without having any one person knowing what your'e up to...you're sadly mistaken.  Every time you use a credit card...every time you make a phone call...every time you visit a website...information is gathered.  Granted...it may not be personal information...but, its information.

This "kill switch"...I think...is a great idea...and it's my experience that it's a vendor's responsibility to keep me safe...and if they can do it with this type of application monitoring...then, I'm all for it.

But how much is to much....asking for feedback on a program is a lot different then having control over someones computer, or the programs on it.

We're talking malicious apps here, people...not rudimentary programs.
