Getting an iMac -- Any tips?
« on: October 26, 2011, 09:50:04 AM »
So, I was saving up money for an iMac now.

And now, I've got 1149 euro's, which is enough for the "cheapest" iMac (the system looks great and the specs are just right for me) :)

But, are there any tips or tricks I should know? And maybe any recommended programs around here?

(No I am not going to install Windows on that machine -- Windows is one of the reasons I'm stepping up from my current machine)
Maybe you should marry that thing since you love it so much. Do you want to marry it? WELL I WON'T LET YOU! How does that feel?
That thing is probably some sort of raw sewage container. Go ahead and rub your face all over it.

Looks mighty nice forsre What are you using for protection...like firewall and such. Is Zone Alarm made for the Mac. That's a good free firewall app.

I know you don't need any antivirus but I don't want to risk that my project or something gets leaked or infected.

I will be using it for everything I do on a computer. Developing, playing games, browsing the web, etc.

Oh btw is there anyone who knows a good free text editor for programmers out there? I use Notepad++ at Windows computers but apparently it doesn't have a version for the Mac.
It doesn't need to have a FTP client included.

Well, everyone around me says I don't need anti-virus so I'm probably safe if I don't install one :)

I'm now collecting a few programs I used on my Windows PCs and placing them on my USB stick (yes I know Macs can't write to NTFS and I have it formatted to FAT32)

Zone alarm is not an anti-virus it is a firewall to keep you invisible on the net, which is always good IMHO. Try here and see if any of these are free:

Thanks, I got Bluefish. Looks the best to me :)

Anyway, as far as I can see there is no Mac version of ZoneAlarm.

But I also heard Mac OS X has it's own firewall. I'll try googling some more lately if the OS X firewall doesn't work out.

I hope the built in firewall with mac is better than the one that comes with MS, lol. It probably is. :)

Well, I tried it lately and it certainly is better then the firewall in Windows.
To be honest, the whole OS is better then Windows :P

I installed a few games on it (Sims 3, Portal 2, Bejeweled 3, etc.) and they all run extremely fine. Portal 2 was running bad at the laptop but on this iMac I don't see any lag in one of these games :P

get a PC they can do all the mac can do and more PC wins  :)  not to say the problems with mac. personly get a mac with a gd CPU because it may just go boom (no save unlike PC it save any work to your files :)  what i mean is mac had so alto save so u just lose it :( )

I know this does not help in buying a mac but I think people that are going to buy a mac should be aware of that they are buying because all my m8s had not like it after they got it

I do like it now that I have it.

And when Windows crashes it does not save any files either. When it shuts down it doesn't save anything...

And I hate Windows. It's just... It doesn't do a shit I want it to do. With everything you get that crap of "Unknown Publisher" or 10.000.000 warnings of "Do you want this program to do ...?"

And with a Mac people can optimize their programs for a specific kind of computer. In PCs, every computer is different.
