PC shutsdown and restarts
« on: October 07, 2011, 10:41:21 PM »
My computer shuts off and restarts every few mins and at first i thought maybe i had a virus or malware so i had ran microsoft home essenstials anti virus with the latest virus definition update and malware bytes but neither program found anything bad . so if my computer is clean does that mean my  power supply is dying ?

You can try reinstalling Windows.

Else if you can't or don't want to I suggest you take somebody to look at it.
Maybe you should marry that thing since you love it so much. Do you want to marry it? WELL I WON'T LET YOU! How does that feel?
That thing is probably some sort of raw sewage container. Go ahead and rub your face all over it.

Are all the fans workin inside the computer. Have you been keeping things clean inside the case. ??? Crack the side open and turn on the computer to make sure all fans are spinning the way they should.

Do you have Windows Update set to automatically install updates?

I decided to open my computer and blow out all the dust that was in there and i bought a new 350w power supply to see if that will work but after installing the new power supply and everything else that needed power. I turned on my computer and did some things on it and the computer just goes off and restarts even with the new power supply.

so now i am thinking it might be the hard drive that is failing ? Any ideas regarding this

My computer is a emachine T3418
160 gb harddrive
2.2 gb amd athlon 64
1 gb ram
running windows xp

Sorry haven't been around...been fixin computers, lol. :) Anywho, so all the fans come on and you have a new power supply. When you had the side open did you happen to notice if the ram modules were seated properly and how many of them there were. ???

Provided that you do not have your PC parked by a heating vent, the things I would check ..

CPU/Processor fan is running AND the heatsink is completely free of dust/lint.

All fans are spinning and are dust free.

All cables are properly plugged in.

Memory boards are free of dust and plugged in.

CMOS battery is not weak.

Harddrive is not overheating.

If using addon graphic card, the fan is working and is dust free.

Defrag and chkdisk the harddrive.

Software wise, have you recently installed any USB drivers/devices or other software that may cause problems?  You can see if your harddrive manufacturer has a test utility for the drive. If so, I would first back up the drive before using their test tool.

I gather that you are not getting the blue screen of death, BSOD?

Even if you are not getting the BSOD, you could still have a bad memory board. Swap the slots for the memory boards and see if the machine will boot or if it fails/crashes quicker than 'normal'.

If possible, you could just use one memory stick, machine will be slow, but if it fails on one of the sticks, then you know you have a bad memory stick/board.
