Faster boot times
« on: December 01, 2009, 06:42:10 PM »
I figured I would write out a couple tips to speed up your computer. The first one I`m going to mention is cleaning your start up folder.Yep the one in your "start" menu None of the programs listed here are or should be system critical. Meaning anything in here can be deleted safely. Some times programs can leave/install mini programs here that aren`t really needed at start up.

Second, lets take a walk over to msconfig. To get there go to your "start" menu then to "run" then type (without quotes) "msconfig"Now click on the "start up" tab. Everything in this tab starts every time you boot your computer. Removing things from this list will really save you time on boot up. Applications like Nero Check can go and any other small programs like that that are slowing you down.

Now lets stay in that app and click on the "Services" tab when there, put a check mark in "Hide all Microsoft services" Now all your left with is all the "third party"apps on your computer. Uncheck the ones you don`t want and click apply. If you find ANY service you DON`T know about click "Start"==>"run"and type (without quotes) "services.msc" This will give you a much more detail description of what those unknown apps are. Tp permanently disable a service, right click on it and go to "properties, here you can turn its start value from automatic to manual.

Another little useful way to speed things up is by disabling the xp splash screen. You know,  the one that has been there forever when you boot your computer. Open "msconfig" and go to the "boot.ini" tab put a checkin the box that is labeled "/NOGUIBOOT" (without quotes) and reboot.

Also on a final note Microsoft "Disowned" a program called "Bootvis"claiming that this is a tool that won`t  improve boot/resume performance. They say it just triggers the "boot optimization routines"that are built into windows xp. You should be able to find it using Google. Once you have it, run it and click on trace then "boot + driver delays" after rebooting it will show you an analysis of your boot sequence. Click on "trace" , Then "Optimize" and reboot.

These are just a couple things to make your system boot a bit faster. Hope they work for you.
