Weird humming sound...
« on: July 29, 2011, 03:48:36 PM »
Right, this pretty much scared me.

So, my ol' slow Pentium 4 PC (ehh, I hate it in terms of speed xd) now makes a weird sound. Last thing I did inside was clean a bit up ???

Although, I was cleaning around the processor ventilator and accidently touched it (a bit hard) :S
Could that be the reason?

(I can bring it to the local computer store, but idk what that is gonna cost me ???

Again, I hate the damn thing, it's so damn slow (that's why I cleaned it :S). The local computer store advised me to upgrade my RAM (currently 2 GB), but the laptop I'm on now works like a charm (Intel Core 2 Duo T8100, also 2 GB RAM) so I think it's my processor.

This is my motherboard:
ASUS P5KPL AM Special Edition (probably that was the cause of the VERY high price (500 euro))

Idk which Pentium 4 processor it has in but it is so damn slow...

Call me crazy, but I think my iPod Touch 4G is even faster (256 MB RAM, 800 MHz Apple A4) then that... (plus it does not make noises)

The standard noise is like "wrrrrrrrrr" and now it's louder then ever plus it's like something it hitting something else each time :-\

Maybe you should marry that thing since you love it so much. Do you want to marry it? WELL I WON'T LET YOU! How does that feel?
That thing is probably some sort of raw sewage container. Go ahead and rub your face all over it.

Hi Yoshi
Im not a computer whiz but it sounds to me like something has fallen into the fan. Maybe when you bumped it something fell loose or something.  Again just a mechanical type guess

How did you clean it....did you use a can of air or a static free brush. ??? I would think there is a big dust bunny caught somewhere that still has to be and should be cleaned out. :)

Thanks both.

@CASMAN: I guess so, I have no idea.

@bigguy: with my finger and a cloth.

I pulled out the graphics card, cleaned it, put it back and then I got to the motherboard. Previous time I cleaned it, the sound still was normal (but I did not clean the motherboard).

I think it got worse after I got around the processor fan ???

Right, I opened it up again and found no bunnies, nor dust (yeah a tiny bit in the processor fan).

I cleaned it a bit more, found a screw that was a bit loose (and fixed that), and now I have it closed up again.
(I got pics but could not upload them here for a vague reason ???)

I am too afraid of turning it on, actually :-[

Turn it on and see what happens. It could have been the screw that was loose. :) Did you get an error message when you tried to upload pics. ???

Jup, "Unsupported format".

I'll try it later today, when I'm about to shower (I'm on the laptop downstairs now).
(I'm not scared if I see the "Windows was shut down incorrectly" screen, I turned it off the instant I turned it on with the weird sound xd)

Make sure your pic is .jpg or .png. It should be fine.

I'll try again in this post (with one pic now)

EDIT: Now it works, uploading the others :)

EDIT2:
First pic, this is the "thing" that I touched while I was cleaning around the processor fan.
Second pic: This is the graphics card, should be connected normally (if not, please tell me :) ).
Third pic: Not sure what that is, but it should be connected properly (again, if not, please tell me :P).
Fourth pic: This is the processor fan itself.

From the pics all looks pretty clean. it could be vibration in one of the fans....or the bearings are going in a fan.

I'm sorry for the bad quality though, there's a 0.7 MP camera in my iTouch (and they say it can record HD video?) :(

I'll try to turn it on at a later time. Maybe it could have stopped now, idk ???

Hi again
I was just thinking about spinning parts in a computer. There is also the DVD or CD drive that spins. That drive also has moving parts.
Which leads me to ask how many components of a computer aside from the switches have moving parts or spin. Again
I am not a computer whiz but something must be spinning. I would unplud the fan/s one at a time and see if it goes away. Then if not unplug the dvd drive and see if it goes away. I think you should be able to find it if you unplug something and it goes away.

Good point, which follows my way of fixing stuff, but I am not gonna risk it :-[

The DVD drive in that thing is as quiet as it can be.
The thing has always been loud in the terms of fans.

Do not start unpluging fans. They are there to wisk heat away from vital parts of the computer. The things that are spinning in a computer are the hard drives, fans in the power supply and a case fan if you have one and the processor fan. Maybe a fan on the video card as well if it needs one. The cd drives do not spin unless they have a cd in them. Turning off the case fan is fine. What would really be the best thing is to go out and buy a can of air and a paper mask for your face and then blow out the computer. if the sound does not go away then I would say it is a bad fan.

I am gonna try it out after mom's downstairs (which should not take too long).

@ bigguy: Call me crazy but the local stores here have no cans of air ???
My dad has a blower though (though I guess it's not gonna hold that) ;D

@ alahuin: As far as I can see the CPU fan is fine.

:'(

The sound is still there.

To me it sounds like a fan is going crazy to the case (after shutting it down, there's still something slowing down) :-\

(to mention it, there's a black...hole? On my case on the inside, and the case is pretty hard to put together)

Best buy, Walmart....someone has to have a can of air....Zellers, lol. A missing blade might well be the problem as alahuin has posted. Check the fan in the psu.

As Bigguy said there are only certain things that spin. I would target them 1 at a time.
My guess is a fan!
