Xubuntu 9.10
« on: December 14, 2009, 11:47:59 AM »
I installed Xubuntu 9.10 on this Dell D630 laptop that I had laying around, I have to say I'm really impressed.  It auto detected everything except for the wireless card, and it took literally 2 minutes to get that working with Ubuntu's Restricted Driver installer doohicky.

I'm not usually a fan of Ubuntu, but I have to say, It's really come a long way since Breezy (The last time I used it).  Couple that with the sily smoothness that is XFCE 4.6, and you've got a pretty powerful distro.  It flies on this laptop, which while pretty good, is a bit lacking in the ram dept. (2.2 C2D, 1.5G of ram.)

I am changing my tune about the *buntus, at least for Karmic, I've never had an easier setup, ever.

Ubuntu is good. Always has been IMHO. I think I started playing with it around the time Breezy was released. Network cards have always been a problem though.

I started using Ubuntu with Warty, all the way through Edgy, though Breezy was the last one I seriously used, I find the way that Ubuntu does rolling releases to be annoying, there was always some breakage.  After Edgy, I migrated over to Debian, and that's where I've been ever since.

I use Stable for servers and Testing for my desktop, and surprisingly, I seem to have less breakage than I did with Ubuntu, though I'm sure they have gotten better, and I am seriously impressed with Karmic

Other than using Ubuntu and whatever this server is running, I don't get into it much. I guess I do have it running on my home server as well. Not sure what version of Linux that is.

I thought it was CentOS but didn't want to say anything in case I was wrong. ;) Thanks Nesa.

I downloaded it but still have not got around to trying it out. I think I must really take some time and install it on one of my other PC's

I would like to get back into it but I need to learn how to run it through the command line for my server.
