Will Social Media Replace Search?
« on: January 17, 2011, 02:16:58 AM »
This is a question a lot of people seem to be talking about around the internet, most especially on online marketing and SEO blogs and such. I think a lot of it comes from Facebook's successful surpass of Google as the #1 visited website in 2010 (and most searched for term). Some people think this is Microsoft's key to competing with Google and is already investing a lot of money in Facebook and integrating Bing search into the site.

After thinking about it a lot recently, I wrote a little article about it on my blog that I'm slowly working on. It's kind of long, but I tried to be thorough and I hope it's useful or maybe an interesting perspective to some. If anyone wants to read it, it's posted here - "Social Media Marketing and Other Things That Aren't New"

I don't think any social media will replace a search engine, facebook tweeter and the rest might be heaven for marketing and for people selling their products.
I know for a fact that most IT professions say google is their number one tool, if they see an error or a missing library they google it to see what/where to get it. The people making the libraries or documentation about program/operating system errors won't ever open up a facebook or tweeter page (I'm talking about open source projects).

They have no PR teams and to them its also a waste of time, lets take this site for example its a lot eaiser for google to scrape it and broadcast our information then for us to write articles here and also a mini article on facebook. For one Bigguy isn't a fan of it and I'm against it as well
As for the other Admins and mods I don't know if any of they have the time or patients to log in here look at the posts then, log into facebook and look at the comments on the same article.

This is just my opinion we will see what happens.

So what happens if say Facebook develops or integrates its own search engine? Will people ever even visit Google anymore?

What if Facebook gets so hooked up with MS that Windows somehow comes preloaded with some kind of Facebook portal just like it comes preloaded with IE. Instead of even using a Browser to get on the internet, you some kind of Facebook web portal.   haha, I hope that never happens that would be terrible.

Microsoft has been trying for years to overcome google in the search engine war, Facebook is good for young people (teens to late 30's) but the old just want a simple page that lets them search.

Google is fast, stable and easy to search, would facebook ask you to sign in every time?
Time will tell Google did overtake the first ever search engine Yahoo so anything can happen.

Thinks that Bing is going to flex it's muscles soon.
I guess we will see...

Lots of people rooting for them lately. Google just had a big update though so I guess we'll see.

Apart from having Facebook and all it's users shot at dawn, if MS ever did that I would have to capitulate and buy a Mac......
