Add/Remove progs blank

I've just found that going to add/remove progs in an effort to tidy the old PC and the box was empty it just said wait while populated and its done nothing else :-\

Things I've tried so far
  • Registry clean - no change
  • Repair windows XP from CD - no change
  • Punched case in frustration - no change
  • Ran disk check - it freezes and hangs on phase 2
  • Took dog for walk - no change
  • Searched net tried all manual edits to registry - no change
  • Replaced mshtml.dll - no change
  • Ran AV, Superantispyware, Spybot S&D - nothing found no change
Can anyone else offer me any suggestions I'm stumped on this  :-[

Can you uninstall a program from it's own uninstall file and see if that brings anything back to add/remove.

The only way I can uninstall progs is via the uninstall tool within CCleaner and that lists all the progs no problem.

Check to see that Appwiz.cpl is in your Widows\System (or system32) folder. If it's not copy it there from the net or the cd or another machine. If it is there it could be corrupted.

If a system restore to an earlier time doesn't work or you don't wish to do that..here is a possible fix....

@ alahuin tried to run the M$ fix and it errors with " The Troubleshooter Doesn't Apply To This Computer"  ???

Sounds like a typical Microdaft answer....Linux is looking better every minute..lol....

And punching the case did nothin eh...that usually fixes most problems lol. I'll keep thinking and searching and post back when I come up with something. :)

If I find the answer I'll post the resolution but it looks like I'll have to do a full install and I really really really don't want to do that I have thousands of images and it'll take me an age.  >:(

I just came across this...it may or may not be relevant...

I'm guessing what was happening was for whatever reason the add remove programs was trying to scan Drive D: for whatever reason and it had corrupt data on it which is why it took so long. I'm not saying this is going to solve all hang ups, but I tried every tip I could find and no dice. This actually worked.
