Running out of IPv4
« on: February 14, 2011, 03:57:23 PM »
Are we running out, yes this is confirmed. Are we working on a solution, not as fast as we should be. Will the internet crash, no but there will be some huge problems. There are 5 places that give out IP addresses to ISP's These are called RIR (Regional Internet Registries) These 5 places are:

Afrinic
Apnic
Arin
Lacnic
Ripe NCC

There is only about 500 000 000 IP addresses left. These get used up faster in some parts of the world then others. IPv6 is not out yet and something even worse is it's not compatible with IPv4. Although IPv6 has been around since 2002 or earlier it's rare that people like you and me use it. It's more for businesses right now I believe and even they don't use it that much.

Tuesday, February 15 marks world IPv6 day around the world. Different parties around the world will be testing this out to see how it goes. Google comes to mind to start off with. Consumers like you and me won't get to try this out at all seeing as our ISP's don't support it and neither does the hardware we use right now. (Routers) Are we in trouble, have we waited to long to get this new protocol in place. ???

My ISP has supported IPv6 for about one year I would hate to subnet it....
It is the answer to the IP shortage problem lets hope we don't have to upgrade the stranded again for a good 50 years :)

They should have been working on this along time ago. Leave it to them to wait til the last minute, lol. Not sure if my ISP supports it or not.

Just checked my ISP and I just got a page that says

"The BT UK6x IPv6 service has now closed. Thanks to the thousands of users; we enjoyed providing you with our pre-commercial IPv6 services."

Looks like I missed the boat there :(

IPv6 has been tested since about 2003 maybe even 2000, with all that testing I see a few hic-ups still to come. The major problem is a lot of companys have bought ipv4 ip subnets. They won't get any ipv6 ones to compensate them so they need a fast ipv4 to ipv6 transfer protocol the ones out there at the moment aren't too good, also you would expect massive testing before this goes live.
Imagine if facebook went down all the kids would have to go outside and play  :no
People would have to socialise without a PC this can't happen  ;D

lol, not outside to play, the sunlight would kill half of them, lmao. I know it's been tested for awhile now but they should have finished the job by now you would think. That's a lot of testing.

In networking they do extensive testing for a project this big I would have hoped more intensive testing. We will see what happens when IPv6 goes live, all the DNS servers need to be upgraded.

It's a huge job for sure. I would have thought they would have started this way before 2000. I guess they were saaying in this article that they didn't expect to run out of addresses til 2016. Even still, this should have been started and tested a long time ago.
