Gawd, even beer and Creedence Clearwater have not fixed this problem.

Now, I can connect to the web, and go places, but can not do the MS updates. IE 7 will not connect to the site, except in safe mode. I have even downloaded ( via another PC ) the MS Update Agent, still no workie.

Any ideas of how to fix no IE connectivity, before I install XP for the 3rd time?

Sure..throw IE away and install FF or Opera...

Hi guys ... yep, Opera and FF both work, pinging works, everything works. Except IE won't connect to any MS update. The only reason I need IE is to update the XP.
First this board has dual lan ports, that may be part of the issue. Second, after both fresh reinstalls of XP, I then installed manually, SP 3 followed by IE 7. Now, prior to SP 3, I do not recall if I connected to WinUpdate with IE 6 or not.
I have use the NBTSTAT -n and I can see that 3 are registered.
I have made sure all services are started or are in manual.
I have used the ipconfig /all and /renew ... to no avail. I do see my IP host information, but nothing for the PC.

I have done the 'netsh int ip reset reset.log' and 'netsh winsock reset catalog' and rebooted and no joy.
I have System Restore back to SP 3 and done the above and no joy.
I have danced outside, naked and howled at the moon. No joy ... but was refreshing, though a bit chilly.
The error log that is generate when doing a Diagnose is:

I am at an absolute loss and am close to doing another reinstall. When I do, I will see if IE 6 will connect to MS, if so I will do the upgrades via IE 6.

First I would try disabling one of the lan ports in device manager and see if that makes a difference. IS the date on your computer the correct date. ??? Have you used ipconfig/flushdns at all. ???

I have tried this option and it does not work. All it does is make your floppy cold, lol.

*alahuin also winces at the bad joke..lol..
Ermm..I am using the original 2002 XP Pro (with SP2 added) and have been since 2002. I have NEVER done any Windows updates (except things like direct x, windows installer etc.) and to date the only problems I have had with XP are self inflicted ones....
Every year or so, XP gets tired (my fault) so I do a wipe and clean install (with the 2002 disk) which makes things run better for another year-ish....

;D ;D   yes .. floppy did not work as expected afterwards .. so I was told.    :D

I have reloaded XP again, should have disabled the second LAN prior but did not. However, I will disable it on the next boot, then try to connect to MS and see what happens.
I am almost ashamed to admit that I forgot to do the ipconfig /flushdns. Not so sure it would have helped though. Just odd that MS and Opera will connect to inet and work great, only problem was MS would not let me into their site. Almost like a firewall issue. Checked all that and it looked good.

Well, off to try again.   :)

At long last, XP is installed, updated and defragged.

Best guess is that when two LAN ports are enabled, the BIOS tags them as some numerical step such as 0 and 1 or 1 and 2.  So the physical left port is 1 and the physical right port is 2. The problem is that the base XP OS seems to swap the ports 1 and 2 for 2 and 1 in its net software. This is with the latest LAN port drivers loaded from the vendor.

Here in is the problem, you can enable LAN 1, put the CAT 6 cable in it and connect to the net, ping and go where ever you want ... but there is no local LAN adapter DNS/IP stuff built. Still works and ipconfig shows all the Host IP stuff. But, when you connect to Microsoft, for whatever reason, MS may see the connect as an intruder/hack attempt of some type and block you. Busy LAN 1 and RTS LAN 2 and you get the same scenario above. In either case, no DNS goodness is build.

However, go to the BIOS and disable the secondary LAN, reboot and what you notice is that the old physical LAN 1 is now the physical LAN 2 and vice versa. So move the Cat 6 to the new physical LAN 1 ( old physical LAN 2 ), ipconfig /renew and viola, you have connectivity to Microsoft.
Who is more right in their approach ... Microsoft or Gigabyte is unknown to me. There were several issues that led me down the errant path and caused me to reload XP three times. One was the intermittent bad floppy drive that would produce the " Stop 0x0000007B "  error  only after well into the OS updates. This distracted me to thinking that I had driver issues. That led me to disabling services and unloading drivers looking for the culprit as well as disabling physical devices such as ports. Eventually I found that problem to be a faulty floppy. At the same time I had likely corrupted XP by using various last ditch efforts, that a reload was the best thing to do.
The problem is fixed, thank goodness and I want to thank you guys for listening and helping. No more dancing in the cold this week.   :)

Marked as solved. Glad it's fixed. I figured it might have something to do with two lan's. Games don't play at all or well if at all when two physical cards are in your box. So I doubt it is just a MS thing. Glad it's fixed though. :)

Working on the premis of "If it ain't broke don't fix it" seems to have stood the test of time and for my pc needs, the 2002 XP functions perfectly.
I have of course tried newer versions on different PCs and found they upset certain programs/apps that are dear to my ancient heart..lol...
Having said all that, I do have Win7 running on a second PC....
