Having discovered that optical mice don't like to work properly on a variety of surfaces i.e. solid black, glass, heavily patterned surfaces etc., I came across this solution:-
Printed out the image below, it's A4 size, cut it in half and had both pieces plasticised.
I now have 2 extremely efficient, shiny, thin and washable mouse mats.....
