Street View
« on: May 15, 2010, 08:59:59 AM »
Anyone here that has ever used Google's street view feature knows how cool it is. I use it all the time. As a matter of fact the car that takes all the pictures drove right past my house. So now I can almost see my house. What I didn't know was a long with the pictures they were taking, they were also pulling publicly broadcast SSID and MAC information from   Wi-Fi hotspots. Meaning they were checkin out what internet activity and sites every one was visiting. Alan Eustace, Senior Vice President of Engineering and Research had this to say:

"It's now clear that we have been mistakenly collecting samples of   payload data from open (i.e. non-password-protected) WiFi networks, even   though we never used that data in any Google products,"

Hmm, sounds a bit weird to me. Read more on it here

You can see right into my windows ( house variety)  see my little one's cot in the bedroom and the back of our settee.   Pity I weren't changing close when they went past, that would have screwed their site up. ;D

Looks like Ireland has requested Google remove all of it's data it collected from the street view cars. Personally I think more countries should be asking the same thing, unless they are willing to do it voluntarily.

Wow that's creepy.  The kind of thing we should expect from a big, shady company like Google though.
