Speed up Internet traffic
« on: October 18, 2009, 09:32:54 PM »
If the online connection is not flowing as you want, use the port forwarding to solve the problem

Routers are devices increasingly simple to configure. However, many features are included that are not properly listed in the manual, which tends to take away all the potential theory.
If you often do file sharing on the Internet through applications of peer-to-peer (P2P), then it is good to know how to open the doors of the router to get the best results.
Port forwarding (the same as for forwarding or, as is sometimes mentioned, tunneling) involves the opening of a network port from one node to another node. This technique allows another user to be able to reach a port on your router.
Software ports are nothing more than bonds numbered a computer uses to sort types of network traffic. A port may support incoming traffic (incoming), output (outgoing) or both. Some services are defined root, such as File Transfer Protocol, or FTP (port 21), and hypertext transfer protocol, or HTTP (port 80).
Thus, the operating systems are able to find them easily.

When a door is opened for a service it is given - for example, an online game or a P2P client. For security reasons, all doors to the Internet and most LAN ports (LAN) are closed down, so that traffic is not able to flow through them.
The process of forwarding a port is complicated, involving a set of routing combination of ports with a rewrite of data packets. A conventional router examines the packet data and sends it according to the destination address of that package. Port forwarding examines the packet header and directs it to another host, again depending on the destination port.

Thinking ahead
You can forward ports on the router administration, but the process varies according to the manufacturer of the equipment.
Search settings or Application Rules. It is this area of the administration panel that can manage the list of applications allowed or blocked. In the first box should be able to enter the name of the application to which the rule applies. Then you must set a start port and end port (range of ports or port range) for the application driving traffic. An excellent guide covering hundreds of applications and most popular games can be found in Port Forward.
Finally, click Enable or Allow the selected port. You may need to restart the router for the changes to take effect.

Refer to the static IP
If you want to get the best results, this is the only way forward.

A static IP is no more than a fixed IP address that your PC uses every time you connect to the Internet.
Unless you have specifically assigned an IP address to your router will probably be using a dynamic IP that changes each time you connect. The static IP makes it much simpler task of the router to communicate with others, but some argue that in this way, the PC is most vulnerable.
The static IP addresses are very popular among the community of users for data sharing and online gaming, and is thus able to get the best performance. So much so that today there are many ISPs that offer the possibility for the user to have a fixed IP.
Setting a fixed IP is not complicated. In Windows XP or Vista, go to Run or Search, and enter cmd in the text bar to open the Command Prompt. In the next window, type ipconfig / all and press Enter.
You will see a lot of information, among which are some basic definitions that need to note: IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and Name Servers (DNS server).
Be sure to write down what is what. Go to the Control Panel and go to Network and Sharing. Select Manage Network Connections, click the right mouse button on your connection and go to Properties, Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) Properties.
Here, you must manually enter the details you noted earlier, clicking Use the following IP address. Choose from fixed IP addresses and enter the following IP address.
If you can not connect to the Internet, verify that the DNS servers are correct, which may force him to contact the ISP in order to ask for confirmation.

I used this on my one game and I also noticed a great improvement
