W7 Scan & Fix
«
on:

Hi Guys,
do any of you know how to disable the really annoying "Scan & Fix" popup when a usb stick is inserted?
I have spent around 2 hours scouring the internet with no concrete solution.
I wonder if there is a registry hack for this...
I know if you allow the scan & fix it is supposed to not ask again...but it does..it's not important, just an agravation..
Regards

Try this. Plug in your usb drive and then Open the Control Panel (All Items view), and click on the Device Manager icon. In Device Manger, double click on Disk drives to expand it, then double click on the listed storage device that you want to disable write caching for. Click on the Polices tab. Under the upper Removal policy section, select (dot) Quick removal, or check the
Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device
box, and click on
OK
. Click on
Yes
to restart the computer to apply.

Thanks Bigguy, I have done that with 4 separate usb sticks, rebooted on each occasion yet that irritating popup still pops up..I know I'm being silly wanting it not to popup but it still pisses me off..lol....

There is another way to stop pop-ups but I just have to remember how to do it. I think it stops ALL pop-ups though and I don't think that's what you want is it.

You're right Bigguy, not all popups....
What really annoys me is the restrictions Microdaft put in their software, like the
OS
is controlling the end user and not the other way round..
I would convert to Linux or even Mac (Shudder) if all the progs I need to use were written for them but sadly that's not the
case
. Even Win 7 doesn't run a lot of my software which is why I have it installed on a spare PC so I can get familiar with it in case any of my clients need help with it....(sigh)...
Long live XP...lol...

I agree with you about the o/s controlling the user. It's always been like that though, doubt it will ever change. I'll figure it out and get back to you.

Have you tried going to "Start" and typing "cmd" Right click on the shortcut and choose "Run As Administrator" Once in the window type:
type "chkntfs /d

its running scan and fix because you didn't unmount the usb before removing it.
A guy at school did this and lost 2 presentations for class about 2 weeks worth of work, I recommend you unmount it first then remove it

@ Bigguy..
yes I have done that and still get the popup....hmmm....
@ Nesa..
I have resorted to testing it with a newly formatted stick with a single 50k text file on it so it doesn't matter if it gets killed..lol...but still no joy with the popup....
Thanks to you both for your input....
It really is not that important, now I only wish to stop the popup because I can't, if you take my drift...and from what I've seen on the net so do hundreds of other people....so..3 Gold Stars to anyone who can crack it..lol...

Yes Bigguy, I also did that and yes, the popup stopped for that particular stick but then this is the basis for my "Gripe" if you will, that once again we the end users are being controlled by the
OS
.
I am going to examine the registry in detail to try and find the entry/entries that initiate that popup and hopefully kill it...though if it is buried deep enough, I may pass away before I find it..at least I won't be bored for the next 'n' years ..lol...

Update....
Before messing with the registry and probably crippling W7, I made a cup of tea, took 2 tokes on a tiny pipe I have for occasions like this..lol.. closed my eyes and entered lateral thinking mode...
Around 30 mins later, I plugged an external usb hdd into my PC and guess what? the popup didn't popup! Hmm..
In the light of that I formatted a usb stick in NTFS on my XP machine and added a few applications and images.
When I inserted the stick in my W7 rig, the popup was noticable by its absence!
I tried the same thing with 2 other sticks with the same result..no popup....
It would appear that W7 does not like usb sticks formatted with FAT 32, which all of them are by default and thus displays the popup..ok, if you do the scan and fix, W7 then allows that particular stick to be inserted ever after with no popup (which is not the point of this excersize)...
Though I haven't been able to disable the popup, this is possibly the quickest workaround for anyone who really hates the popup...
You could probably mark this thread as solved...sort of..lol...
Anyone using Windows
OS
's prior to XP shouldn't format their usb sticks with NTFS as they will be unreadable in those OS's..but then you all knew that anyway..lol..

I have marked this solved. It makes perfect sense really that W7 wouldn't like FAT32. Thanks for posting this.
