Can see the login screen but can't login

I can get to the login screen but when I put the password in, it takes a long time and tells me the password is wrong. I know it is the right password. It only "stalls" when it is the right password. Otherwise, it returns the wrong password error.

It is a friends laptop. She gave it to someone to remove the "viruses" and they said they "removed" Windows. Apparently they messed it up, but didn't remove it. I took the drive out and put it in an enclosure. Grabbing all of the documents and pictures off of it now also running a virus scan. So far just some adware.

It's weird because safe mode does the same thing. I tried last known good configuration. All results in the login screen just not working. I even tried just logging in as administrator which has no password. It stalls, acts like it is doing something, and then just shows the login screen.

Maybe resetting the password would help. Have you tried to use the xp cd to do a repair install. ???

Ah I see. Then resetting the password might be the best option. I assume you have tried logging on with both administrator and user. ???

EDIT: I guess the admin login is not shown is it.

Safe mode shows administrator. Normal doesn't. I tried administrator but that won't allow me to login.

You can try the admin login at the login screen on a regular boot. If you boot up and press ctrl+alt+del "twice" at the login screen a password window should appear for the admin account. If you have tried it in safe mod though I doubt it will work on a regular boot.

If you look at this article it shows 3 ways to reset the password. Scroll down and read option 3. It gives a download link for an iso image. If you can burn this to a cd then you can boot off it and reset the pass.

When I click administrator on the login screen, it doesn't ask for a password. It says loading settings... saving settings...
