Belkin N150 connection issues
« on: December 08, 2009, 08:38:28 PM »
I have been experiencing connection issues with my router - Belkin N150. I have several laptops that I try connecting to it. All but one cannot keep a connection for more than a few seconds/minutes. It either drops the connection to the router and/or it drops the connection to the internet. Either way, I can't have that.

I've upgraded all drivers and firmware for my router and the laptops. Here goes the specs for the router:
Firmware Version: F6D4230-4_WW_1.00.03
Boot Version: 1.01
Hardware: F6D4230-4 v1000
Firewall Settings: Enabled
SSID: you don't really need that
WPS: Enabled
Remote Management: Disabled
UPNP: Disabled
DHCP Server: Enabled
Connection Type: Dynamic

The one laptop is a HP Pavillion dv9000 with a Broadcom wireless b/g card, another one is an Acer but I don't have it with me. Neither of those work. Now, the first laptop I setup on this network is a HP Pavillion dv7 with an Atheros AR5007 b/g wireless card. All run Vista. I had Ubuntu on one of my Dells and I still had the same problem - very annoying in Ubuntu. I am currently just trying to get this HP dv9 working.

I'm using every browser - IE, FF, Safari, Chrome. I have AVG installed and no viruses have ever been found. Same goes with Norton and McAfee on some of the other laptops. I've closed down every program. Tried turning on/off Windows Firewall. Tried turning on/off any anti-virus programs.

If you have any tips or information or even need more information from me (barring passwords :P), please just post. I need to figure this out. My girlfriend keeps taking my laptop to do Christmas shopping and that is stopping me from doing any work. Thanks.

Have you looked at the adapter settings in the one computer that is connecting and compared them to the settings on the computers that aren't. ???

Are you dropping connection totally or do you still have limited connection. I frequently experienced the same issue. I have a similar setup (wireless router and two laptops). Mostly I was getting limited connection. After resetting the router and connecting each laptop to the router via ethernet cable initially the issue has all but disappeared. Actually in the user guide for my router it says to connect initially using ethernet cable with the main computer if the router is only being used a wireless access point. Why i had to connect via cable with both laptops initially after reset, to resolve the issue, is still a bit cloudy to me.

The adapters look like they are setup the same. Not sure though. Talvace, the laptop is currently plugged in via an ethernet cable. After I disconnect it and turn on wireless, it still doesn't work. It is limited and sometimes it drops it altogether.

Have you tried to restore the factory defaults on the router to see if that has an effect. ???

If your factory setting had WEP enabled rather than WPS you might have better luck that way

My brother was over and he started messing around with it. I tend to not want to mess around with the adapter settings too much, but he didn't care. Luckily he is reckless. He seems to have fixed it. He enabled everything that was in the adapter settings and turned everything on as high as it could go. Now the laptop is running fast and smooth. Quite impressive actually. Thanks guys. I'll have another post on another issue in a minute ;)

If he has set the adapter settings to 100 mbps full duplex you could have problems down the road. More than likely not but just a "FYI". :) Glad you got it fixed though. I will mark this solved. :)

I just went through a week or so of these dropped connections. I tried everything from adapter settings, to programs, to registry tweaks. It has sorted itself but I think it was my isp to be honest. A lot of road construction I guess can do this. Funny thing is if you call your ISP they more than likely are not even aware that road construction is in the area and disrupting service. That shows how much most of them pay attention.

I have figured out why my connection has been crap lately. For about a month or so my internet has been intermittent. I phoned support as a last resort and it seems my cable modem is to old. What the "It" support said was I have "packet loss" from my cable modem. essentially it is dropping the connection because it cannot keep up with the traffic is the way I am taking it. I get a new modem tomorrow and everything should be fine. :) yay, I'm happy again, lol. Until it comes time to set it up. :(

Lets hope its not a problem on their end (most of the time it is, in aus anyway)
It took me and my ISP 4 weeks to explain to my Telco that they set up my ADSL wrong. We tried 3 different modems had the telco techs come by. The 2nd time I got a good techie he said its prob a miss-configured port and it was.

I have the new modem now and am testing it out. If I still have problems then I will be calling them again and they will be fixing it. My first thought was it was a problem on their end but then again my cable modem is about 5 years old...at least.

Well, it has sort of. Still fooling around with system settings and seeing if I can get it better. For the most part it's fixed but still having a few time outs here and there I shouldn't be.

Replaced my on-board network card with an add-in pci one and things have really picked up now. Plus cable was down for a bit when I got up this morning so maybe things are fixed now. I'm as fast as I used to be right now anyway.
